• No, you don't have to use the USB cable at all unless that feature is of use to you.

• Thank you for your inquiry. If you would like your computer to have a graceful shutdown then yes the USB cable would need to be plugged into the UPS at all times. The USB connection that would provide a graceful shutdown would be labeled USB Data Port. This connection would need to run directly to your computer. The USB connection on the top the unit would not need to be plugged in all the time since it is used to charge small equipment like your phone if needed.
