It depends. It can take several small surges but no consumer UPS is designed to survive a direct lightning strike! The UPS should warn you when it has had enough.

How many lightening strikes the UPS will take will largely depend on how large the strike was. If the UPS were to take 1 large lightening strike it can cause it to fail. What can happen is the UPS will sacrifice itself instead of passing the surge on to your equipment if it can't shunt the excessive voltage to ground.
