“I plugged my UPS into one wall outlet and I have my laser printer plugged into a different outlet in the same room. When I turn the printer on, the UPS makes two clicking sounds, despite not having anything plugged into it yet. Is this normal?”

this is not neccesarily "normal". It has been my experience that the beeping occurs when the battery is low or it sesnses a drop in power. When you fire up your the printer it sounds like its sensing a power drop.
