Yes it will protect your computer I have it connected to a machine it's like casino machine and we have a lot of issue with the electrical system in Puerto Rico and that thing worked perfectly fine I don't have no issue with my machines or my computers it lasts like 30 minutes on I had enough time to save my stuff before the shutdown I truly recommended big time

Yes you could connect your desktop to the surge online side to prevent the UPS from becoming overloaded. The BN450MNW would support 255 watts of power connected to the battery side you would want to keep the load under that. Just note if the PC is on surge only side it will turn off during a power outage however it would be protected from surges.
