“Does this particular iPad use a SIM that is inserted in a physical slot, or does it rely on an eSIM?”

It can take both, however most carriers with automatically give you an esim

There is no sim tray on this one. So I assume that the iPad uses the Esim.

It has both. I took my old sim from my 2016 iPad pro and put in this 10th gen and works great. No calling to have it activated.
