What does the term “unlocked” refer to or mean ? null

a unlocked device means it doesn't have carrier locks or software so you can do what you please with the device

That means that you could take it up to cricket or you could take it up to spectrum and get it activated basically any cell phone service from what I know, but you would have to pay a fee for a line for it to work, but you could call off of it to other people that have iPads , as in FaceTime.

Unlocked means that you are not locked into any carrier. You can choose any carrier you want anytime you want. You do not have to be on a contract.
