• I am not sure if there is a trade in for the pencil. I purchased the 2nd generation pencil when I purchased the IPad. I never tried using the 1st generation pencil.

• It works with apple pencil 2nd gen... You can also use third party pencil... But the apple pencil second gen charge and stick to the side of your iPad magnetically... And that is neat.
