I only use the pods for talking on phone which works great, quality wise. I only use one at a time. Only problem is they only last 1.5-2 hours max then I have to put the other one in. I thought each would last 4 + hours or so. Is it a bad set? null

No that’s the battery life on them, I always may sure the charger is fully charge so I swap them each time

Maybe its not fully charged before you started using it. Try to charge both fully then use it. Use it multiple times to verify if its good or not. If you still see problem bring it to the Apple store for repair

No, this is normal. Using the microphone uses significantly more power. Here are the battery specs right off Apple.com

AirPods with Charging Case: More than 24 hours listening time, up to 11 hours talk time 
AirPods (single charge): Up to 5 hours listening time, Up to 2 hours talk time
15 minutes in the case equals 3 hours listening time or over an hour of talk time

Which iPhone do you have? I find the battery lasts longer with my iPhone 8 Plus than it did with my 6 Plus probably because of the different bluetooth standards.

I believe you may have a bad set. I use mine to watch Netflix, talk on the phone and streaming music starting when I leave my house at 6am and go till around lunch before I have to swap headphones.
