“The Apple Air Pods was recommended for my radio requirement, but there's nothing mentioned about selecting a radio station. There's a picture of a watch but price not mentioned for the 2. Are they both needed to get radio reception? Thank you”

Anything you can play on your watch or phone will come through your AirPods. The reason your watch is listed for a subscription is you can subscribe to listen directly on your watch without your phone. You must have your phone or Watch to listen with your AirPods.
