If he’s in a place with enough apple devices near buy. I put one in my elderly father’s backpack that he takes everywhere.

based on my experience, it probably would – so long as he came near other people with iPhones. It’s contact within Bluetooth range with other iPhones that provides the feedback to know where that tag is at any given time.

I wouldn’t count on it, because mine always tells me to move to another location to be able to connect with the airtag or says needs more lighting when the lights are on.
