Nearby is within Bluetooth range, which is about 15-30 ft depending on interference.

Bluetooth range is approximately 30 ft, but if you use an iPhone 11 or 12, you can use its ultra-wide band (UWB) circuitry to find your Air Tag once you get within closer range. If it’s further away (like if you left it at the gym, etc), the find my app on your iPhone will show last-known location.
