These actually support the Intercom feature - you can literally talk and send messages between HomePods.

To use this feature, you have to have both HomePods setup through your Home app on your smartphone, and the Intercom feature must be enabled for both speakers (also something you do in the Home app). Once these things have been done, you can ask Siri to Intercom to all rooms or a specific room, and then you tell Siri your message he will then pass along to other HomePods throughout the house.
