It’s the amount of memory for storage i.e. (pictures, applications, etc). It does not have a direct connection to the performance of the device

If you don't download movies ore have a huge photo file then the minimum storage is fine. My recommendation is to buy the midrange as apple charges too much or additional storage and with wireless and usb apps you don't need to pay for this
