That is what I did recently but I cancelled the old number since there was no owing amount or contract for it and got a better deal by adding a line

Please try again later.I bought a new WiFi/Cellular AT&T iPAD at Best Buy to replace an older model, and while at Best Buy had them remove the old one from my AT&T account and replace it with the new one. No change in AT&T charges. I kept the old somewhat fading iPAD and use it just via WiFi now.

Please try again later.sounds about right, but there will also be monthly charge for added line ($10?) until contract for monthly is paid off, even if you don't connect via cellular and only use wifi. That device will share whatever data plan you may already have if your enable cell data and move outside a wifi signal.
