I just got an iPad for my husband and it was $10/mo to add the device to my plan. If you get an iPad without cellular you can just use one of your devices as a hotspot.

They will tell you exactly what you need to know. 2-year contract typically means that you get a discount for signing a new contract. Without contract, there's no discount and you must pay full retail price. You can add Verizon-compatible devices to an existing Verizon account with no restrictions.

You will be locked into a 2 year contract to keep the line. If you choose not to, you can just use the wifi connection (like your laptop) but you won't be able to connect to the internet when you don't have a wifi connection when you leave your home with it.
