“I am wanting to buy the iPhone 12 mini for my daughter for Christmas do I have to activate the phone today? And if so can she still use her old phone till Christmas? Not sure how that works. T-Mobile is our carrier.”

We have Tmobile as well. If you activate the phone rightaway, the one she has will be disconnected immediately.
