“What does it mean when you buy it through this carrier and "activate today"? Does it mean you need to open a new line with the carrier? I already have a T-Mobile sim card and I'm just looking to place it in this phone. Will I need to open a new account?”

Where ever you buy the new phone, the agent will transfer all content from your old phone. You don't have to activate anything unless you are changing carriers.
