Do u have to have a AT&T phone or contract with them null

I've been with ATT for 16 years and I have multiple accounts. I will be forever loyal and I am happy customer. This just my second iPhone and I love it, I also have Macbook. The service given to me by the Bestbuy associate was spectacular. She was well focused and friendly. I am enjoying my phone and I will do another upgrade soon on my other accounts.

I'm not sure whether AT&T still requires a contract, but in order to use the AT&T iPhone 6s+ it is necessary to have service with AT&T.
