The down payment is the first installment of payments. The phone will be activated. There will most likely be a activation fee. After the down payment the remainder of the balance will be divided into 24 equal payments which are added to your monthly bill. This is on the sprint network. Not sure about other networks. If you don’t pay your bill and your service gets cancelled you still have to pay the balance of the phone. You should just pay your bills

If you don’t pay, then your carrier may disconnect your services. If you leave your phone company without paying the total cost of the phone, the company will Give the phone a bad ESN and you won’t be able to use it with any carrier.
