As far as I know 8GB applies to RAM and not SSD. RAM basically determines how quickly and smoothly your computer can switch between tasks and handle commands. While external hard drives and storage increase SSD (from 512 on this model to anything higher), there is no way to increase RAM. You can’t add to that bit of storage. MacBook Pros have more RAM but are more expensive.
