8GB RAM is more than enough for a non-tech person, it meets the performance needs for day to day uses. This 8GB is used to load the apps and programs while you are running them, on the other hand, the 512GB SSD represents the memory capacity for the photos/media and other data that you want to store permanently on your computer.

8GB of memory, is not storage capacity, it is a temp storage for processing information or moving data, and usually helps the Speed at which your laptop can process things, so it runs faster between tasks. 8GB of memory should be more than enough for what you do.

I believe the 8Gb you’re referring to is the RAM size. For your use, 8Gb RAM is just fine. Especially with an M3 Mac!
