No, it can’t really be used with a protective case, but it can be quickly removed since it’s magnetized.

I chose the folio because I couldn't justify the added expense for the other. Aside from the back-lighted keys, I am completely happy. When I type in the near-dark, the iPad Air 4 could easily detach and another folio put in place in mere seconds, but that's not what I do. I just fold the keyboard back. That disables the keyboard and I use it that way.
