The Apple TV is not a television tuner. In addition to purchased or rented media content from Apple,you can view via apps for the major networks (CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, PBS), cable networks, Hulu, NETFLIX,etc. You cannot view local broadcasts, but you can view programming from their networks (subscriptions may be required to view full offerings).

Yes, this is just a streaming device for services like Netflix or Hulu. What I suggest, as a way to cut out cable and reduce costs and still get local channels, is just buy the apple tv and subscribe to Netflix/Hulu/HBO (that should give you more than enough entertainment), then buy a decent indoor antenna to pick up your local news stations (local NBC, CBS, Fox affiliates) for local information/emergencies
