• Yes, it should work for you. I have the same devices. You will need to plug the adapter into the MacBook and then your phone's lightning cable into the adapter.

• No, this is the wrong connection for you. The larger USB end is "female" just like the USB access port on your MacBook Air, so they will not connect.
