I know off the top of my head that with the gen 3 watch you can link it up to your cellular network. The gen 2 uses something more like bluetooth so you have to have your phone nearby in order to get details like weather or answer texts/phone calls. It has a range like a normal bluetooth speaker. I think it tracks workouts a little more accurately too, and uses altimeter and gps to help track how far you go. I did just get my gen 2 watch about a month or so ago so I haven't looked through everything it has to offer. But I know the cellular feature is new to the gen 3.

The 3’s faster, because it has a newer processor. Also, new to the 3 series is an LTE model, which was not available in the 2 series. With the series 3 LTE model, you can use the watch stand alone to make calls, iMessage, etc. you have to pay for an extra connection for you mobile provider plan and it uses your existing cell number instead of a totally separate number.
