I usually turn it on before I get in the water.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You technically don't have to do it before, but doing it will help the phone be aware that it is entering water and reduce the sensitivity of the screen so it doesn't think warm water droplets are touches to the screen. You definitely have to use the water drop button afterwards, and it will emit a series of sounds that will vibrate the water from around the speaker areas where water might sit unnoticed. http://www.idownloadblog.com/2016/09/27/apple-watch-and-water-resistance-a-quick-guide-to-proper-use-and-case/

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You use the water drop button to expel any water after getting the watch wet. It makes a sound to clear out any water.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. Before will turn off the touch screen so the water doesn't "push" anything on your face but you can use it after getting it wet if it is just a small incident with water and it will cause any water in the ports to be expelled
