You don’t need to buy the cellular with it. The gps works fine for me, the cellular only adds that you don’t need to have your phone within the range and can still call/text/message. But it also adds I believe $10 onto the bill monthly for Verizon.

Because this watch does not have cellular functionality, it must be near the phone to connect and receive calls. If you buy one that also has cellular functionality you have to pay a little bit more for the watch, pay a little bit more for the service (at least with AT&T), but you don’t have to have your phone with you to make calls.
