The built-in GPS works independently of your iPhone for distance, pace, and route mapping in workouts.

Yes this watch has standalone GPS. You can use it on a run or bicycle ride without needing your phone with you. You will not, however, be able to make phone calls without your phone with you because it does not have cellular capabilities (need to buy a different mode watch for that capability).
