When you connect it to your iphone through your carrier your carrier will give you the option for it to be a stand alone line or connected to your existing iphone. As far as I understand the apple watch is only compatible with iphone, if you choose to add it to your existing plan you have the option to add it as an additional line or connected with your existing iphone. If you have it connected with your existing iphone, then when calls come in they will ring on both cell and watch. This is a good feature if you're away from you're phone or want to go for a run without your phone. If you choose for it to be separate from your phone then it will be its one stand alone line. Many use it to have kids have one and you get to monitor them on the app and where they are. Hope this helps!
