- Answer Absolutely. Even if you have the GPS version and your phone is nearby you can use it as a phone. My wife uses her watch all the time when she doesn’t know exactly where her phone is. Also she will answer her watch driving and everyone says it sounds like she is actually using her phone. Hopefully that helps.

- Answer From my experience of having an apple watch, i can say that is very usefull because (in your case) people will be able to reach him and it shows on his fist that someone is calling or texting. Stay awear that if you buy the Apple watch GPS without the Cellular he will have to keep the phone near by, and in case you buy the Apple Watch GPS + Cellular, you can enable a E-chip so he doesnt need to have his phone.
