I have a base station, which is needed to store the feeds weekly if you want to record activity (it holds them for about a week i think). Otherwise, you will get the notifications and be able to monitor your camera activity right form your phone. So, no base needed if you are fine about not recording the activity.

The Ultra 2 requires a base station. Look at the other Arlo Cameras that hook directly to the wifi or cloud.
