The firmware updates should be all automatic. You shouldn't need to do anything at all.

The only other way to do so would be to hack your router / set up some sort of ISP software on your computer to make the modem think it is talking to an ISP. DOCSIS standards leave it to the provider to approve and push new firmware updates. If your ISP is giving you the run around, go read the DOCSIS Standard and point them to the relevant section
