“What would be the purpose of pre-ordering, or even buying this game physically since it requires an internet connection to install? That defeats the purpose of physical. Might as well just buy the digital at that point.”

Physical means that the disc can be transferred. So you can give it to friends or family, or sell it. You can’t transfer the rights of ownership with digital, but you can with physical.

If it's the Base game ( no bonus content / DLCs / gear ) then you will not need a internet connection only getting the Base AC Shawos game. Internet connections come into play when getting thing slike DLC ; extra content like weapons ; and or thing slike updates. Unless it says somewhere different , this is the Physical Disc Game WITH bonus content . And THAT bonus content is the need for an internet connection.
