Some people have decried the fact that this monitor does not have a built-in microphone, but it does have a built-in camera with 2-million-pixel power. It also has two built-in 3W satellite stereo speakers and an audio input as well as an earphone output port. A great feature of this monitor is that it provides sound from HDMI and has various and sundry video input options, viz.: HDMI; DVI with HDCP; D-Sub; and, DisplayPort. I use a Logitech microphone which works fine with the built-in camera. I can stand it up on my desk, point it in any direction, and adjust its distance. I wouldn't be able to be that flexible with a microphone that was built into my monitor. My very first computer camera was a freebie from Logitech. It had a teeny built-in microphone but the sound production from it was tinny and weak. When I moved up to the larger, Logitech, desk microphone, I was pleased with the improvement in the audio. All I needed to do was to make sure it was set up as my default microphone. Asus support is very prompt and professional. They can direct you to a link for downloading the manual for this monitor. The VE278Q has the same specs as the VK278Q except that the former lacks the built-in, 2-megapixel camera; however, it is also a little less expensive. On the other hand, if you don't already have a computer camera or you are tired of fumbling with the freebie that won't stay perched atop your current monitor, then the VK278Q is a better choice. You can always add a few VE278Qs to it later for use with AMD's Eyefinity technology.
