“I work remotely from home off a Laptop through VPN and it's hooked wireless to Wifi. If I purchase one of these do I have to add this as a device on the laptop? I have to have quicker speed to download files from internet.”

The device will extend the range of your WIFI signal, it has to be connected to your existing router for the laptop to access it.
