You are not limited to laptop's resolution unless you screen mirror. If you select "only on external monitor" you can go as high as the NVIDIA card allows. I am hooked up to a 4K monitor, all is perfect looking

To get the best performance for a 1440 display, you would want to use the thunderbolt port to whichever input that auxiliary display has. After you plug it in, you will want to go to your display properties and view the refresh rate settings as well. Sometimes they default to 59.95
