comes with 16gb soldered and one empty slot. I put a 32gb 4800 dimm in and now shows 48gb of mem.

Please try again later.The former, a soldered 16 GB plus an empty SODIMM just ready for you to plug in either another 16 GB or else a 32 GB of memory, for a total of 32-48 GB. Asus actually listened to our complaints from last year about them giving us a total of 16 GB of which almost all users then had to throw away the 8 GB SODIMM to replace it with a 16 GB or 32 GB SODIMM - a big waste. Now what is still unclear to me is, if you put in a 32 GB stick this year to bring it to 48 GB total, does that ruin dual channel mode? Or if it does, I've heard dual channel doesn't make a big difference with DDR5 but don't know if true. However, I did notice that one of the approved Asus custom vendors does sell a souped up model with 48 GB on their top-end model(s). So I would be tempted to try the 48 configuration.
