the performance capabilities of the Apple airport extreme router are spec'd lower than the RT-AX58U. also the RT-AX58U supports AX I have RT-AX58U and its nice. I have 13 devices attached to it and I see no real slow down. Bare in mind for my main workstation I currently I have a older Netgear A6210 usb 3.0 wireless adapter attached so my top speeds are a bit reduced despite its top potential but I still manage easily 60mb/s ( i downloaded 123GB in 37 minutes at this speed) in download speeds with TDS fiber (netgear has become trash given their lack of support and proper firmware upgrades and forced paid support after 90 days booo!) . when if I decide to upgrade to a newer Pci-express wifi 6 adapter (this is preferred compared to USB actually if you want higher bandwidth and performance as they tend to be cheaper and with more features compared to USB which are more catered toward laptops than desktops) when I connect via a Cat5e or Cat6 cable to my workstation I easily hit 620 mbps up and 450 mbps down that translates to around 75 mb/s download speeds. On my phone I easily hit ~580/430 mbps via 5ghz wifi . Also I have tested wifi range and its pretty solid I have yet to test its max field range but so far I can go out an easy 50-75 ft anywhere in my yard and stream music without buffering when mowing as I have a .3 acre lot ). RT-AX58U also supports AiMesh meaning you can string together multiple Asus or Mesh capable routers acting as Access points to increase your range and coverage which frankly is a lot cheaper than an actual Mesh based Routers which tend to lack key performance based features compared to a traditional Router with mesh capabilities. the RT-AX58U Has a built in firewall and Protection to prevent intrusions but requires a bit of tweaking to get just right. You can track real time network traffic with each device with up and down speeds. The port forwarding and DNS features are really simple but robust. I love the UI too which is very simple to understand but has a ton of features to tweak and adjust the antenna capabilities. IN a nut shell will it improve performance compared to your airport? yes, beyond a doubt given the performance capabilities of each the RT-AX58U just stands out as a higher performance router that has not only more features, but faster bandwidth capable up to 2400+ mbps via 5ghz and 574 mbps via 2.4 ghz and is much more flexible and future proof. If you decide to get this router 2 things, make sure to update to the most current firmware I did this the day I connected it. and 2 make sure to get a wifi analyzer (inssider is free and very good features ) to see what channel your router is set to in relation to any router signals around your neighborhood so you can adjust your router to a channel that is free of any signal interference in turn improving performance and strength of your signal e.g. the lower the -#Db number the better plus its color coded (green is good, red is bad). I hope that helps.
