My guess would be no. Your laptop's built in wifi should function well enough. You'll likely experience the best performance boost by upgrading your router.

If you're located a long way from the router, if your router is using older technology, or if the connection to your ISP is slow, it can cause the problem you describe. My suggestion would be try it, and if you don't see an improvement, return it within the prescribe time frame for a refund.
