It won't ruin your laptop, but whether it will improve your connection depends on the condition and capability of your laptop's internal WiFi adapter. In my case, the internal adapter was failing intermittently, so it was a huge improvement back to normal operation.

The connection is from a network card, inside the laptop, attached to the motherboard. It’s only purpose is to look for internet connections, and tie that connection from your laptop to the WiFi signal. The performance of your laptop is solely based on what you have on it, how much memory are you running, how many programs are you simultaneously using, and so forth. Not affiliated to the connection of the network.
