Yes you can with a 2280 no problem, even 4TB was recognized.

I upgraded mine to a Samsung 990 Pro 2 TB drive. It works flawlessly with this Samsung drive. Getting all the data from the old drive onto the new drive can be challenging. Besides the NVME enclosure, you'll need software to move the data. I could not get the Samsung Magician software to work. YMMV. But doing the physical work to unscrew the laptop back and take out the old NVME drive and put the new one is VERY easy. ASUS made the NVME easily accessible. Thanks ASUS! Also, I bought mine on Bestbuy.com. They did a fantastic job delivering the laptop in a timely manner and supporting the sale. Thanks Best Buy!
