“Why do people buy expensive hot spots over simply using hotspot on phone? I understand that while the phone is used as a hotspot you may not be able to receive calls, but is there any other reason? isn’t the service identical”

Many people, like myself, live out in rural areas where connection both to an ISP or a cellular network can be quite spotty. These hardware hotspots can not only utilize their data more efficiently compared to sharing a phone's connection, but can also connect to external antennas to improve signal.
