The back is made of a heavy like cardboard and you could easily cut holes in it if you wanted. The shelves are only about as deep as the game pkgs so you could not set a game system on it.

However, once you decide the configuration for the shelves it wouldn't be difficult to use a boring bit and drill to make openings for cables, etc. Just keep in mind the depth of each shelf is about the length of a CD, DVD or video game case.
