“is this ready to play out of the box? What does it mean the cartridge is not included? then in the questions it says the cartridge can be upgraded implying it has one but you could get an upgraded one in the future.”

Mine came complete and ready to use out of the box. It works great.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.some minor set up is required like balancing the arm. the stylus comes with it and plays fine. depending on your set up you may have to set switches on back.
