“I’m going to be moving to the US later this year then moving back to the UK after a couple of years. If I buy this in the UK will I need a transformer to operate in the US, or if I wait to purchase in the US will I need the transformer on return to UK?”

You'll need an adapter either way you go.

The provided external power supply (wall wart style AC Adapter) is a switching type supply which can accept 100 to 240 volts, 50 or 60 Hertz.
