No, there are various settings to choose from before creating an MP3 file recording. On the other hand, you could save the first transfer as a WAV file. This file can be converted to any format desired.

For regular rock and pop recorded at 256 bps or better, I personally can’t tell a difference. Although some people can. For opera and classical, I can hear a slight difference if I listen closely.
