Assuming that the cartridges used on each turntable would have the same output level, the level would be determined by how much gain the phono preamplifiers have. That is, the gain of the preamp built into the device that you will be connecting the turntable without a preamp to (meaning the device has a dedicated PHONO input on it for a turntable), versus the gain of the phono preamplifier that is built into the turntable.

Times have changed, and the built-in preamp coupled with Moving Magnet (MM) cartridge produces much greater presence, and thus volume that derives from the combination of the two components. Unless you're looking for the ultimate turntable in combination with $25K in Marantz amp and preamp, etc, etc, this Audio-Technica will deliver the goods with what for me was a startling improvement over the old Dual. Brings out sounds from records I'd forgotten and that had been lost to IC-based receivers long ago. I went the extra distance to add high-quality 9.8' AudioQuest cables for distance and improvement over conventional default thin RCA cables. To seal the deal, at least for me, is the built-in USB connection for hookup to computer (output only, per Audio-Technica).
