“Will I need a phono pre amp with this turntable? If not, can I plug it directly into my current speaker system or does it require special speakers? please advise. thank you”

Nope and one reason I bought it as my 7.1 modern hi-tech super surround sound system has no phono inputs/pre-amp. It has line level output so you can use an aux in or CD in or any line level input.
