• A:Answer Depending on the size of the metal. It can detect a quarter up to 2" away. If the metal is larger it would be able to detect it further away. In general it can detect metal about 2" - 8" away.

• A:Answer Unfortunately Barska's metal detectors are not capable of finding pure gold. If the gold is under 14 carat, you can try using this handheld detector, but mind that the sensitivity of this detector is only 1.5 inches.
