They go into sleep mode when you take them out of your ear regardless if they're in the case or not. Walking with them in your pocket doesn't "wake them up".

I can say that they do a good job of detecting when they are in your ear and when they are not. I think your pocket will just depend on if you have other items in your pocket or if anything comes close enough to the proximity sensor to make them think they are in your ears.

This the one thing I do not like about them I left them on my tool box most of the day and they had low battery when I put them back on later. Now when take them off they go directly into the case. Problem solved
